When I was a young girl I couldn't live without my Barbie dolls. I had more dolls then one child needed. I even had a Cher doll, Donny & Marie dolls, Farrah Fawcett and the John Travolta doll. I also had clothing and accessories galore!
My cousin Cindy used to spend the summers with me and my family. We would literally take over the playroom and set up homes and rooms for the Barbie dolls. I think we created the first Barbie soap opera! LOL! We would have this doll dating that doll but really he had a crush on the other doll. Let's just say we were "creative" with our story lines.
Barbie has changed a lot over the years. I don't mean to knock an American Icon but Barbie's figure and clothing just seem a bit unrealistic. When I was a child I didn't see it that way but now that I'm a mother and I look at Barbie in her skin tight, skimpy outfits I worry about what message that is teaching little girls? That you have to have big boobs, a tiny waist and dress in skin tight skimpy clothing? Humm...
I recently learned about a new line of dolls called The Only Hearts Club. The Only Hearts Club dolls are much more appropriate then a Barbie doll (in my opinion). First of all the dolls are aged to resemble your average 'tween/teen. Also their facial features are very realistic looking. I was very impressed with how much work went into creating such realistic faces for these beautiful dolls.
The Only Hearts Club dolls are about the size of a Barbie doll (maybe a wee bit shorter). Since they are 'tweens/teens they do not have big breasts and tiny waists like the Barbie dolls do. These are dolls young girls can really relate to because they look so much like themselves.
The Only Hearts Club dolls come in different ethnic skin tones and features. I really like that about the dolls. I think it's great that your child can play with dolls that reflect different ethnicities. After all in real life we all don't have friends who are blond hair and blue eyed. No. we have friends in different shapes, sizes, skin tons, hair color...you name it. The Only Hearts Club dolls offers young girls a variety of dolls.
We own Briana Joy (African American) and Anna Sophia (Hispanic American). My daughter loved the fact that they were NOT blond haired dolls. My daughters friends in real life come from different ethnic backgrounds so she appreciated the fact that the dolls were a lot like her friends in real life.
My daughter loves the dolls. She was a bit disappointed that she couldn't do anything with Briana's hair (it's a short, curly Afro-like hairdo) but she still loved the doll. Anna has long brown hair which my daughter loves to style.
My daughter LOVES the outfits that came with the dolls as well as the ones you can purchase for them dolls. They are VERY "hip" and "trendy". The clothing is something that a typical 'tween/teen would wear. The outfits are NOT skimpy or sexy. They are respectable outfits a young girl would wear to school. My daughter even saw one outfit she liked that looked like a pair of Ugg boots which are all the rage these days. The dolls have hoodies, cargo shorts, t-shirts, camouflage pants and many more styles kids these days wear.
The bodies of The Only Hearts Club dolls are very soft, almost plush. Only their hands and faces are plastic. It does make them a lot different then a Barbie doll but having the plush bodies gives them the ability to be flexible and "bendy". You can pose The Only Hearts Club dolls in many different positions, unlike a typical Barbie doll.
The Only Hearts Club dolls each come with an adorable "pet" and you can buy so many adorable outfits and accessories for them. My favorite is the horses and the stable sets you can buy. I want to get those for my niece who LOVES horses. I think she would really enjoy the set. I am also thinking about getting my daughter a few of the pajama sets as well as the "Club Room" set so she can pretend the dolls are hanging out and having a sleep over.
