Fashions that Free Children

One of my FAVORITE Winter accessories this year is my scarf from We to Me. Here is a picture of the scarf (but mine is blue). It's made from bamboo fabric and it's a whopping 93" by 16", so you can wear it so many different ways.

I have never had anything made from bamboo before. When I think of bamboo I think of rolly polly Panda bears chewing on bamboo sticks. I would never expect that you could use bamboo to make clothing. I just had to see for myself so I picked up the scarf by We to Me. WOW! The scarf is super soft. I was expecting it to be stiff and rough because that is how I picture something made from bamboo would be. It's not. It's very soft and pliable. It sort of reminds me of the same kind of material you'd make a well worn t-shirt out of. It's also silky smooth too. I love my scarf because I can wrap it around my head and ears on super cold days (I don't do hats), or I can wrap it around my neck as a fashion accessory. It's a very versatile scarf and I LOVE the electric blue color. It really "pops" against my black winter coat.

I am very impressed by the Me to We company. First of all they use eco-friendly fabrics. I was surprised to learn how wonderful bamboo truly is. Did you know that bamboo has natural antibacterial properties? And not only is it a renewable resource but bamboo holds the world record as the fastest growing plant. Grows up to a meter or more per day! It can reach up to one hundred metres in height in three to four years. Things made from bamboo are also 100% biodegradable, naturally antibacterial and naturally organic.

Me to We's philosophy is that in a time of growing social awareness, consumers want to wear clothing that reflects their values. By using certified organic fair trade cotton, Me to We ensure that you get the best, highest quality products and that farmers, producers and manufacturers all receive a fair wage in the supply chain. Their product line is ethical, flexible and stylish. Their comfortable designs are for everyone who wants to sport responsible styles, from individuals to entire schools, charities and businesses.

Amazingly Me to We also donated a whopping 50% of their profits to Free the Children. Free The Children is responsible for implementing sustainable community development projects including school building, alternative income, health care, and clean water and sanitation projects in the rural areas of Kenya, Sierra Leone, China and Sri Lanka. Free The Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education. Through the organization's unique youth-driven approach, more than one million young people have been involved in its innovative programs in more than 45 countries. Free the Children has an established track-record of success, with three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize and partnerships with the United Nations and Oprah's Angel Network. Unlike any other children's charity in the world, Free The Children is both funded and driven by children and youth. Free The Children’s mission is to free young people from the idea that they are powerless to bring about positive social change and to encourage them to act now to improve the lives of young people everywhere. Now that I have experienced how wonderful bamboo and eco-friendly clothing is I'm going to make every effort to purchase more of it for my family. It might be a little bit more pricey then other clothing, but knowing that it's better for the Earth and that people who make the clothing are treated well and with respect, then it's well worth a few extra dollars. Especially clothing from Me to We because I appreciate that they donate so much to the Free the Children organization.

I am constantly amazed at the different products that come from Bamboo. I remember when I was a practicing Interior Designer (BK - Before Kids) and the new bamboo wood flooring came out. It was one of the first 'Green' products out there as bamboo grows like a weed (no deforestation). Now I see bamboo clothing everywhere. I am just waiting for bamboo ribbon to come out so that I can use them for my hair tutus!! LOL!!

Great blog and hope you can check out mine too!
